16.-18. září LegitLab v akci ve Frankfurtu nad Mohanem
Našeho kolegu Petra Witze pozvali do exkluzivního expertního panelu, který na workshopu ve Frankfurtu nad Mohanem řešil budoucnost megaprojektů a související nové výzkumné přístupy. Z workshopu, kterého se zúčastnili přední evropští experti z oblasti veřejné politiky, správy i územního plánování, vznikly návrhy konkrétních řešení problémů, se kterými se opakovaně potýkají velké projekty napříč kontinenty. Velký zájem vyvolal projekt LegitiLab, který nemá v Evropě obdoby. Aspoň v něčem je ČR v porovnání se západní Evropou napřed.

12.3.2024 LegitiLab se angažuje v projektu železnice PRaK (Praha-letiště-Kladno)
LegitiLab spolupracuje se Správou železnic a obyvateli lokalit ovlivněných plánovaným železničním napojením letiště Praha pomocí upgradu tratě Praha-Kladno. Je třeba, aby tyto projekty byly realizovány legitimně. To znamená aktivně vyhodnocovat oprávněnost požadavků komunit žijících v okolí tratě.

30. 10. 2023 New Science4Policy instructor in the Czech Republic
After successfully passing the Science4Policy course in Brussels, Petr Witz is now a certified instructor in the transfer of scientific findings into policy making. The courses are part of a larger initiative by the European Commission and the OECD: the Joint Research Centre supporting Evidence Informed Policy Making, i. e. the making of informed, data-driven decisions which are supported by scientific findings - more legitimate public policies.

13. 6. 2023 The railway from Pilsen to Bavaria - legitimately!
We have been invited by the Domažlice town to partake along with other concerned stakeholders in the roundtable on the project of modernization of the Pilsen - Bavaria railway. The railway is a part of a major connection in the Czech railway network, and part of the Prague - Munich connection. Together with the national railway administration (Správa železnic) and the mayors of the concerned towns, we searched for a solution for a more legitimate and optimized project execution. Participants on behalf of Charles university were Petr Witz and David Barta. kulatého stolu se stakeholdery projektu modernizace významného spojení páteřní trati z Plzně až na státní hranici s Německem (součást spojení z Prahy do Mnichova). Společně se Správou železnic a starosty obcí na trase jsme hledali řešení vedoucí k lepší legitimizaci a celkové optimalizaci projektu. Jednání se za Univerzitu Karlovu zúčastnili Petr Witz a David Barta.
16. 5. 2023 Consulting on the largest infrastructure project in Europe
We are continuing the collaboration from 2017 - 2020, when Petr Witz consulted as an expert for the Danish state enterprise Femern A/S. The company is currently in charge of the largest and most challenging infrastructure project in Europe: the 18 km long underwater tunnel between the Danish Lolland Island and the German Fehmarn Island. When finished, the tunnel will house a railway and a highway connection between Central Europe and Scandinavia. This will significantly shorten the routes between Copenhague and Hamburg. Of course, the project was fraught with conflicts and controversies - an ideal job for LegitiLab! Because we had made a lasting impression in previous projects, our students were reinvited to help solve sectional as well as more central (and complex) conceptual problems that the project was encountering. Last time, it was our PhD students Stephen Adjei and Johanna Trager led by Petr Witz who laboured to reconciliate upset. Až bude tunel hotový, povede jím dálniční a železniční spojení mezi střední Evropou a Skandinávií, které významně zkrátí cesty např. mezi Kodaní a Hamburkem, ale potenciálně i mezi Kodaní a Prahou. Projekt se neobešel bez kontroverzí a sporů – a to byla práce pro nás! Jelikož jsme se osvědčili, jsou naši studenti dále zváni, aby pomáhali řešit dílčí i složitější problémy koncepčního charakteru, se kterými se projekt potýká. Naposledy si tuto roli vyzkoušel náš doktorand Stephen Adjei, který se spolu s Petrem Witzem a další naší doktorandkou Johannou Trager zamýšlel nad tím, jak usmířit rozkmotřené stakeholdery. Jen tak dál!
12. 5. 2023 Petr Witz chosen by the Czech Government Office as future Science to Policy instructor
Petr Witz is one of the experts who are solving the European Commission's (Joint Research Centre) and OECD's project titled "Building capacity for evidence-informed policymaking in governance and public administration in a post-pandemic Europe". The project's goal is to strengthen evidence-based policymaking and decision-making. While scientific research and findings often exist, policymakers do not use them, or they are not made available for policy use. In pursuit of this objective Petr Witz was nominated as an instructor, he will be trained in Brussels in the second half of June. He will direct his efforts toward maximizing a clear, immediate, and positive impact of his participation on the education (and practical training) of future state administration employees at the Department of Social and Public policy of the faculty.
9. 5. 2023 We organized the "Future-proofing of public policies and projects" workshop
Professor Josef Oehmen from the Denmark Technical University accepted our offer to organize a workshop for students of the Public and Social Policy Department. As part of a long-standing collaboration, professor Oehmen accepted to help students focus on the question of a future-proof policy design, including designing sound policies in fairly uncertain conditions: building projects that are high in legitimacy. The workshop was very interactive and stimulating, and it is a promise for better designed and quality policies in the Czech policy environment in the near future!
5. 5. 2023 Double-tracking the Domažlice railway: a roundtable
We were invited to the roundtable to discuss the project of double-tracking the Domažlice railway. This is part of a larger modernisation project of the Pilsen - borderland section of the national rail network. Local representatives of the town administration, the Czech railway administration, Charles university representatives, as well as land owners and interested citizens were all present at the roundtable. It is clear that the Domažlice leadership values a legitimate project and proper process. We are very thankful for the invitation and we are looking forward to being useful! modernizace celého úseku Plzeň – státní hranice. Kulatého stolu se zúčastní zástupci města, Správy železnic, Univerzity Karlovy i majitelé pozemků a zainteresovaní občané. Vedení města Domažlice patří mezi ta, jimž leží na srdci legitimita projektu a řádný proces jeho schvalování. Děkujeme za pozvání a těšíme se, že budeme užiteční.
25. 3. 2023 Petr Witz is a jury member of doctoral thesis defense in Antwerp
Když Petra požádali, aby se stal členem komise u obhajoby doktorské práce na University of Antwerp, neváhal dlouho. Antverpy jsou krásné město a s tamější Fakultou sociálních věd máme nadstandardní vztahy. Navíc téma práce o vládnutí v oblasti velkých infrastrukturních projektů bylo Petrovi více než blízké. Oproti obhajobám disertací na FSV zde ovšem byla řada rozdílů. Předně, obhajoba je rovnou spojena s promocí. Ušetří se tím čas, ale co když to náhodou třeba neklapne? Diplom je vytištěný a leží na stole, i když vlastně ještě není jisté, zda si ho zasloužíte. Teoreticky se tak může stát, že vám ho v případě neúspěchu rozcupují před očima. – Ouha! To se tentokrát naštěstí nestalo. Obhajoba probíhá ve velkém auditoriu, kam se chodí podívat kolem 40 lidí včetně rodiny a přátel doktoranda. Jak si asi umíte představit, nervy tečou jako tavící se belgický sýr. Člen komise, který přijel z největší dálky, jímž byl s přehledem náš Petr, pronáší hodnocení práce a klade první otázky. Vše probíhá v přátelském duchu, Petr se snaží napětí odlehčit a vystresovaného doktoranda uklidnit, i když jeho otázky nejsou z nejlehčích. Bavíme se mimo jiné o schopnosti PPP demonstrovat po letech implementace svou legitimitu. Poté následují otázky dalších členů komise, dokud nejsou všichni zcela uspokojeni. Na řadu přichází porada komise ve sklepení starého kláštera a Sláva!, obhajoba byla úspěšná. Všichni se vrací do sálu a vedoucí práce pronáší laudatio. Nový doktor společenských věd je na světě!
5.3.2023 Povídání o Legitimizační laboratoři a dalších zajímavostech v podcastu FSV DeFacto
It was certainly not necessary to ask Petr twice to become member of the doctoral thesis jury committee at the university of Antwerp. Antwerp is a lovely city and the interfaculty relations that we have with their Social science department are exceptional. Not to mention that the topic of the thesis - governance in large infrastructure projects - was a very close one to Petr's heart (and expertise). But compared to how thesis defenses go at Charles university's Social science faculty, there were a plethora of differences. Firstly, it is noteworthy that the defense is directly succeeded by the graduation ceremony; it saves time. But what if the defendant fails? The diploma is printed and waits for the candidate, even though it is still unclear if the student really deserves it. Theoretically, they could dramatize your failure by tearing the paper to shreds right in front of you (ouch). Although thankfully, that did not happen. The defense was held in a spacious auditorium which can contain up to 40 people, including friends and family of the candidate. As one can expect, the pressure is on and your nerves are melting like the good kind of Belgian cheese. Traditionally, the member of the committee who travelled the farthest (coincidentally, that was our Petr) pronounces the evaluation of the thesis, and is first jury member to ask questions. In a spirit of camaraderie, Petr is trying to ease the stress of the candidate, though his questions are hardly forgiving. Among other topics, the capacity for public-private partnerships to demonstrate their legitimacy after years of implementation is discussed. Other members of the committee then follow up with their own questions, which goes on until everyone's curiosity is satisfied. The jury then deliberates (in the basement of the old monastery), and Hurray! the verdict is positive. All return to the hall and the thesis supervisor pronounces the laudatio.
